To identify your frame size use a measuring tape and the height chart below.


Height under 5’2″

  • Small = wrist size less than 5.5″
  • Medium = wrist size 5.5″ to 5.75″
  • Large = wrist size over 5.75″

Height 5’2″ to 5′ 5″

  • Small = wrist size less than 6″
  • Medium = wrist size 6″ to 6.25″
  • Large = wrist size over 6.25″

Height over 5′ 5″

  • Small = wrist size less than 6.25″
  • Medium = wrist size 6.25″ to 6.5″
  • Large = wrist size over 6.5″


Height over 5′ 5″

  • Small = wrist size 5.5″ to 6.5″
  • Medium = wrist size 6.5″ to 7.5″
  • Large = wrist size over 7.5″


If you don’t have a measuring tape you can use this simple (less accurate method):

Grip your wrist using your thumb and longest finger.

  • If your finger and thumb don’t touch you are a LARGE frame.
  • If your finger and thumb just touch you are a MEDIUM frame.
  • If your finger and thumb overlap you are a SMALL frame.

Your Ideal Body Weight

Knowing your ideal body weight is a good first step to take before you start macro counting or flexible dieting. This helps you to have realistic expectations and to establish a healthy goal weight.

Understanding your optimal weight can help you with the following aspects of dieting:

  • Allows you to set realistic weight loss goals.
  • Prevents the thinking that weight loss is necessary when it isn’t.
  • Gives you a baseline to use for building muscle.
  • Helps with maintaining a healthy weight for your height.
  • Shows you a goal to strive for if you are underweight.

Why Frame Size is Important

Other ideal body weight calculators don’t factor for frame size and this is an important factor in determining an ideal body weight for a person of your height.

The term frame size refers to the mass of your skeletal structure. Those with more bone mass will weigh more than people with less bone mass who are of similar height. However, this isn’t factoring for bone density.


A 5’6″ woman who has a large frame size should weigh between 139-143 pounds, whereas a 5’6″ woman with a small frame should weigh 124-128.

This feature is why our ideal body weight calculator provides the most accurate results possible and paints a more realistic picture of what your ideal body weight should be.

How Optimal Body Weight is Calculated

Our calculator uses two well-respected formulas for determining ideal body weight. For women, the Robinson formula is used and for men, it uses the Devine formula. (see the references below)

While these formulas can’t account for all individual differences that may contribute to a person’s optimal weight, they do provide a good estimate of what’s ideal for a person of your height.

Taking This Further

Once you have determined a bodyweight that is in the ideal range for you personally, you can use that information to establish a body transformation goal that’s appropriate.

You can then use our TDEE and macro calculator to determine how much you need to eat in order to achieve that goal. This calculator uses the flexible dieting approach that doesn’t prohibit foods or certain ingredients but allows you to eat what you love as long as they fit your prescribed set of macros.

    Hi my name is Tanya. I’m 5ft 0 and I weight 171.2 pounds. I want to loose weight to avoid being in the hospital but I don’t there to be a drastic change, I don’t want to be unrecognizeable, and I don’t know where to start. I’m a tree trunk right now but I want to be a log or a branch not a twig. I know weird analogy. What are some easy and fun ways to loose weight for people who are like me that don’t exercise and are not used to it? Please and Thank you.

      I drink Kale and fruit smoothies with either water or Arizona Green Tea almost everyday or I just drink the tea on it own. Other tea’s that I like are the Lipton Green Tea and the Gold Peak Green Tea. I don’t know whether I should join a gym or just watch YouTube instructional workout videos and just try to imitate what they do. I don’t know if I can afford a gym membership much less a personal trainer. *SIGH* What’s a girl on a budget to do?!?!

    Hi all , I’m starting today . I’m 50 yrs old medium frame 5’2” and 200lbs..
    Trying to figure out my macros:
    1656 cal a day
    121g carbs -29.1%
    169 g protein – 40.9%
    55g fat- 30%

    Is this correct???? Help

      Hi Liana, Almost. Your protein is too high. Since you have 50+ pounds to lose, your fat tissue weight is skewing the formula. On the calculator choose the moderate protein.

    So I am extremely new to this counting macro thing so I am extremely confused and don’t know what to do. I weigh 202lbs and my height is about 165cm. My goal is to lose about 2lbs per 2 week and I don’t know If I should increase protein or carbs or I guess I just need help on how to eat and what to eat to lose weight.

        Hi Daniel, Since you’re a big guy it may be good to aim for a body fat percentage target opposed to the number on the scale. If you could get to 15% body fat that would be a great goal.

    Here’s where it gets confusing for me:
    I started at 210 lbs. back in January of this year. I started with a calorie deficit of 1000 cal per day, then reduced it to 500 per day. My current weight is 157 lbs. I lift weights 6 days a week for 1.5 hrs. BUT, and this is my current dilemma…at what point do I stop? I want muscle definition, which I have on my arms and starting to see on my chest/back, but I have this stubborn subcutaneous fat around my belly, giggly and frustrating, so what do I do? should stay on a deficit until it is gone? How much more weight should I lose?

      Hi Joe, It sounds like you need to reduce your deficit to about 200-300. This will give your muscles a little more for development but also allow for more fat loss. Muscle is your best friend and the more you have of it the better your metabolism will be. Therefore, Feed the muscle.

    Hi, so I’m a 31, female and like 5ft maybe 5ft 1inch. Going by my height I’m under the 5’2″ range but my wrist measurement is 6 3/4 inch. Seems I’m way over the large frame of under 5’2″. I’m even over then large frame for 5’5″ range. So is my ideal weight still 123-127? I haven’t been that weight since I was like 12, lol.

    I am 6’0″ currently weigh 248lbs and have a large frame. I started my weight loss journey nearly two years ago starting at ~398lbs. I’ve never truly had an understanding for what my weight should be considering I’ve gained muscle mass lost fat, but also retain loose skin. Where should I aim to be with loose skin included?

      Hi Christian, Awesome job on your weight loss journey. That’s amazing! You would do better just to track body fat percentage/lean mass. A goal of less than 20% body fat would be ideal. You probably would want to use the 3D body scan method since you have loose skin.

    Does this optimal body weight account for someone trying to gain lean muscle mass? I am 5’5 and weight 135-140 lbs, but I am weight lifting 5 days a week in efforts to gain lean muscle mass.

      Hi Stephanie, If you have more muscle mass than the average woman of your height than your ideal weight would be at the top end of the range or even a little higher than what is listed as ideal. You would probably benefit from tracking your body fat percentage since that would be a better indicator of health than the scale.

    I weigh in at 189 and I am only 5’3″. This seems heavy but I wear a size 8-10 in pants and a medium size in tops. This tells me that my ideal weight should be between 119 and 123, which would make me look too skinny. I work out 5 days a week 2 days doing just cardio and 3 days lifting weights (mixed with cardio). When I got down to 169-165 I was in about a size 6. If I lost another 40 pounds after that I would be a size 0.

      Hi Kate, I totally agree that this isn’t gospel and people can diverge from these results and still be healthy. But also keep in mind that clothing sizes have changed over the years to compensate for the changing population. A “medium” isn’t the same size it was 20 years ago etc… So using clothing size to determine your state of fitness isn’t a good scientific way to measure fitness. Just food for thought.

    I’m an illustrator and cartoonist and am wondering how effective this calculator will be for me. I’m trying to calculate accurate weights for my male and female characters, but, since these aren’t “real” people, all I have to go by is their heights, general builds, and measurements. For instance, one is a 5′ tall female, fit, athletic build (she’s a mechanic), 36″ B cup (at most) chest, 23″ waist, 38″ hips.

    I dont know the accuracy of this, but this is the first time ive seen a realistic calculation for what my weight should be. I average 215 on a relatively sedentary lifestyle and when i eat more unhealthy than usual but when i diet and exercise more heavily, i hit a wall around 190. Most doctors/calculators say 145-154 for me. I have a large frame at 6′. I look like skeletor at 150.

    The frame size calculations are bananas. With measuring tape I’m a “large” and by finger wrapping standards I’m small or maybe medium. Judging myself against other adult women, I would qualify myself as the smaller edge of medium to a solid medium.

    This calculator cannot be correct. I am under my ideal weight according to this. When i was in my ideal weight range I felt like crap and couldn’t see any muscle definition in any part of my body. I hope no body looks at this as accurate.

      Hi Kevin, With all calculators like this, they provide an estimate based on the average population. There are always outliers to such data sets. Because the calculator doesn’t hold true for you personally, it doesn’t mean that it wrong for everyone. For me personally, it’s pretty accurate.
