Why do you need this?

As the use of GLP-1 medication has increased, we’ve noticed an issue with our clients:

There is a distinct lack of advice around how much to eat; sometimes our clients have not been eating enough – resulting in a metabolic slow down.

Why GLP-1 Users Need a Different Macro Calculator

Medications like semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) have changed the weight loss landscape.

But one thing these medications don’t do is tell you what to eat. That’s where getting your nutrition right becomes more important than ever.

Most macro calculators were built for people losing weight through diet and exercise alone.

If you’re on a GLP-1 medication, your situation is different, and your targets should reflect that.

How This Calculator Works

This calculator starts the same way any good nutrition calculator should: by estimating your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) — the calories your body burns just to keep you alive — using the Mifflin St-Jeor formula, which is the most validated method for most people.

From there, it factors in your activity level to get your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE), then applies a 20% calorie deficit — the standard starting point for safe, sustainable fat loss.

Here’s where the GLP-1 adjustment comes in. Research consistently shows that the more excess body fat you carry, the greater your caloric deficit can be without risking lean muscle loss.

This calculator applies a modest additional reduction based on how much fat you have to lose — 2 calories per pound of fat.

So if you have 40 pounds to lose, your target is reduced by an additional 80 calories per day. It’s a small, safe nudge that keeps your deficit meaningful without being aggressive.

Why Your Macros Matter More on GLP-1

GLP-1 medications work primarily by reducing appetite, which sounds simple, but creates a real nutritional challenge. When you’re eating significantly less, every bite has to count.

The most common mistake we see?

People on GLP-1 eating so little that they lose muscle alongside fat.

This can slow your metabolism, leave you feeling weak, and make it much harder to maintain your results once you come off the medication or reduce the dose.

Hitting your protein target is the single most important thing you can do to protect your muscle mass during this kind of rapid loss.

This calculator sets protein at a conservative but effective level – enough to preserve lean tissue without making your already-reduced appetite feel overwhelmed.

The Limits of Any Calculator

A calculator gives you a solid, science-based starting point. But it can’t account for everything – your personal food preferences, how your appetite fluctuates week to week, your training schedule, or how your body specifically responds to the medication.

That’s why the clients who see the best long-term results aren’t just hitting numbers — they’re making changes that actually fit their lives, with someone in their corner to adjust the plan as things change.

If you’d like that kind of support, our one-on-one coaching is built around exactly this.

We work with clients on GLP-1 medications regularly, helping them use the medication as the tool it is – not a permanent solution – while building the habits that keep the weight off for good.

How to Use Your Results

  • Calories: Your daily calorie target, adjusted for your fat loss goal and GLP-1 reduction.
  • Protein: Prioritize this above everything else. If appetite is low, get your protein in first.
  • Carbs & Fat: These are balanced targets — not strict rules. Adjust based on what keeps you full and energized.

These results are a starting point, not a prescription. If you have a medical condition or are working with a healthcare provider, share these targets with them before making changes to your diet.
